Why Can't You Unpush Elevator Buttons?

Pushing the wrong button in the elevator is like the only mistake that there is no way to fix. You are totally stuck with it. Wouldn't you think you could just push it again to turn it off if you hit the wrong one, or when your mother leans on an entire bank of buttons in a hotel? It avoids that awkward moment when you stop on a floor you didn't intend and the doors open. You hope no one is standing out there because it feels like the doors are open for an eternity and you just have to look confused like you have no idea why the elevator stopped. Otis must have had a vindictive side that foresaw people enduring these awkward moments through the ages.

Excuse me! A simple bad choice of places to lean. Who knew you could even hit them all at once!
